Since the inception of Philly Beer Week, it has been a ritual and an honor for The Irish Pol to host the absolute VERY FIRST gig of the 10-day festival.  This year, PBW starts on Friday, May 31st.  So, to keep with the tradition, at 12:01am, we kick things off with our famous happy hour.  Oh, for those who don't know, The Irish Pol was voted #1 Happy Hour in Philadelphia.  Almost all our beers on tap are just $3!  And, we have 40 taps!!!

A list of people, places, and random doohickies?each worth a specified number of points—will be released via Twitter (and our website) on May 31, the first day of Philly Beer Week. Then the hunt is on, and will last until the final pint is pulled on June 9. This exhibition will give you a glimpse into the history of beer making in Philadelphia from the earliest colonial taverns to the craft beer revolution of today. Take a break between beer events to learn about the history of how beer has been made, sold, and advertised in Philadelphia. This special exhibition was created out of the historic collections of the Free Library of Philadelphia with special assistance from Rich Wagner, author of "Philadelphia Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Cradle of Liberty." Look for it on the second floor of the Parkway Central Library.

The Hammer of Glory, the omnipotent symbol of Philly Beer Week, starts its epic day long journey to the opening tap with us at Hop Angel.Once again the Philly Roller Girls have taken on the challenge of skating the HOG the 4.5 miles from Hop Angel to Grey Lodge. Help us cheer them on as they depart.Make of day of following the HOG! Hop on the SugarHouse bus (for free) as it follows the HOG. Stay on as long you like; you can use SEPTA to get back. SEPTA's Fox Chase station is just a block away.

As always we will be helping with the transporting of the "Hammer Of Glory" to the opening tap.  To help with the tapping we will be doing a Flying Dog tap takeover 16 brews on tap and a firkin to be tapped with the Hammer when it arrives.  Later that night we will have the "Sour Mash Bluegrass Band" playing as they always do on the 2nd floor for opening day of beer week.

Just in time for bikini season!! Gose, a specialty of the town of Leipzig and one of the lesser known german beer styles, is brewed with salt water and coriander which results in a light sourness and dryness. This sour wheat beer is outrageously refreshing and perfect to celebrate the warmer months. Several other German sour beers will be featured as well.

Friday, May 31st from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, we will be hosting one of the newest breweries to hit Philadelphia - Perennial Artisan Ales from St. Louis, MO. Buddy Hadry from Bella Vista will be helping us introduce Perennial to Bucks County as we will be featuring Perennial beers all night to get Philly Beer Week started properly!

If you are not familiar with Perennial, here is their bio:

"Our beers are influenced mostly by Belgian and American craft styles, but the addition of premium ingredients such as fruits, spices or wild yeast strains sometimes causes the beers to defy traditional categories. Our barrel aging program will feature beers aged in wine and spirits barrels, ranging from a Rye barrel-aged Mexican Chocolate Stout to a wild yeast fermented Saison aged on Missouri wine grapes in French oak wine barrels. We strive to always achieve balance with each of our recipes, making our beers exceptional with food."

A killer draft lineup from Half Acre brewing including limited batch brews and a few special kegs from the tasting room. A whole crew from Half Acre will be in attendance including Matt Gallagher (Head Brewer), Gabriel Magliaro (President), & Rog McGuin (Sales Extraodinaire) to help us kick off beer week in style.

 

 

  For this special event, we are offering some very rare and delicious barrel aged beers, side by side with the liquor / spirit that the barrels originally held. This way you can learn to identify and appreciate the spectrum of flavors produced by aging a beer in used liqour / spirit casks.  Try them separate, try them together, try them all!   Highlights will include: Shawnee Craft Brewing's V.S.O.P. A few weeks back one of the bartenders at work was playing the new album from a band which I later found out was The Bailey Hounds. He then told me it was our local Narragansett rep Chris Cardillo's band. So when he approached me about doing a PBW event i thought "why not have your band play?" So, ladies and gentlemen we are pleased to present an evening with The Bailey Hounds.

This exhibition will give you a glimpse into the history of beer making in Philadelphia from the earliest colonial taverns to the craft beer revolution of today. Take a break between beer events to learn about the history of how beer has been made, sold, and advertised in Philadelphia. This special exhibition was created out of the historic collections of the Free Library of Philadelphia with special assistance from Rich Wagner, author of "Philadelphia Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Cradle of Liberty." Look for it on the second floor of the Parkway Central Library.

Get a first-hand glimpse of three locations during happy hour while enjoying a local beer at each stop, and a snack at the end.  The pints of beer and food are included in the tour price!
Your expert tour guide will discuss topics ranging from the history of beer in Philly, prohibition, the beer-making process, and Philly's vibrant craft beer industry.  You'll taste the best of Philly's beer within a variety of settings, including historic pubs, breweries, and neighborhood bars.  On this local craft beer tour, you'll quickly get a sense of why Philadelphia is America's best beer city!

Featuring the limited edition Brown bag series of Long Trail Brewery. You will be able to taste through the Brown Bag #s1-4 individually or as a flight, learn about the reasons for releasing each of the different styles and hear about future releases from the brewery. At 9pm our band will kick off, cover free, in the second floor Juke Joint. This event is free to attend.
