Conversations: Breweriana, Collecting Beer Memorabilia

Category:   Other , Home Brewing , Beer Tasting

Museum to Hold a Conversation on Breweriana, Collecting Beer Memorabilia, Followed by a Live Demonstration of Colonial Beer Making Saturday, June 8, 2:00-5:00 p.m.

In celebration of Philly Beer Week 2013, the Philadelphia History Museum will hold Conversations: Breweriana, Collecting Beer Memorabilia, a discussion on collecting beer memorabilia, also known as breweriana, with noted collectors Larry Handy and Dale Van Wieren.  The discussion will be followed by a live demonstration of colonial home brewing in the Museum’s Marian Mitchell Garden by Rich Wagner, author of the book Philadelphia Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Cradle of Liberty.  This Conversation is held in conjunction with Made in Philadelphia, Craft Brewing: It's a Beer Revolution, an exhibition on view at the Philadelphia History Museum on the history of beer and brewing in the city.

Handy and Van Wieren will talk about the brewery collectible hobby, how it started, why they do it, and how you can too.  Beer drinkers have long enjoyed collecting just about everything with a brewery name or brand on it — what we call breweriana today. Types of breweriana include: advertising mugs & steins, embossed beer bottles, beer glasses (etched, embossed, & enameled), beer trays, beer signs, and miscellaneous brewery items such as patches, mini-bottles, openers , beer cans, tap handles, labels, coasters, and other advertising items. Among the first beer collectibles were bottle caps, or crowns, an innovation of the 1890s. Collecting increased in the 1920s with the onset of Prohibition when hundreds of breweries and thousands of saloons were forced to close their doors. Many owners and workers held on to items that were left behind. After Repeal, when a brewery would close, taverns often sold or gave away the advertising items from that brewery which they had displayed. In the Museum’s garden, beer historian Richard Wagner will present a colonial home brewing demonstration.  Wagner will show how beer was made in the 18th century using the same kinds of hops, barley, and wooden tools used to brew beer in Philadelphia 250 years ago when the drink was as popular as it is today.

PRESENTED BY PHILADELPHIA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION and PHILADELPHIA RUNNER

It's that time of year again: the Dock Street PBW Scavenger Run and Music Fest, that is! Come out and celebrate the end of Philly Beer Week at our biggest event of the year!

Run for the beer! Run for the music! Run to DS! Runners will kick off at Dock Street Brewery and scavenge through West Philly and University City. The run ends back at Dock Street Brewery just in time for our annual FREE music fest. You'll be greeted by refreshing DS beers, delicious slices, and absurdly good jams.

The Scavenger Run:

The run's trajectory (tentative): A 3-5 mile scenic-adventure run through University City/ West Philly. The official course will be announced during Philly Beer Week and emailed to participants. The course will consist of 4-5 stops. Runners will be given a token at each stop. First runner back to Dock Street wins! Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in Male/Female/Overall. Note: this is a fun run and not officially timed. Streets are not closed, so runners are advised to run and keep safety at the forefront. Just a great excuse to exercise, drink beer and enjoy live music!

Participants receive: one beer coupon, all new Dock Street tee and compete for beer prizes. Every runner earns an additional beer coupon upon completing the course.

Run kicks off around 12:45pm. Please arrive early. Check-in table opens at 11:45. Registration is $20, visit dockstreetbeer.com for more info on how to reserve! email dockstreetfunrun@gmail.com with any questions. Very limited space, register soon!

Some notes:

-We're keeping it simple and casual to ensure everyone has a great afternoon.

-We've simplified check-in and beer/tee pickup.

-Check-in and ID check will take place swiftly at the same table.

-Water will be available at a few stations along the course

As customary, drinks and pizza will be a-plenty during our post-run music fest. Just imagine that first sip of Dock Street beer after a long run. And topped with our eccentric local lineup, this event is shaping up to be the best of the West... and perfectly close out PBW.
