Germany Comes from Kensington: Philly Brewing Keep the Glass Night
Thursday October 24, 2013    7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Location:  Hop Angel Brauhaus     Neighborhood: Northeast Philly    Price:  Pay As You Go
Category:   Brewery Spotlight , Competition & Giveaways
Brewery:   Philadelphia Brewing Co.

We are fortunate to have two full scale production breweries here in Philadelphia that both keg and bottle regularly. | Philadelphia Brewing is based in Kensington. They are very nice people who make great beer and are all about being great corporate citizens. | Philly Brewing makes beers that Germans would love. Full of flavor but with moderate alcohol levels so you can hang out and enjoy a few. | We will feature 3 of their beers that fit right in with what we try to do here at Hop Angel, which is showcase locally made, freshly made German style beer. | - Kenzinger is an easy drinking Kolsch style beer. But easy drinking doesn't mean boring. | - Schwarzinger is their Bavarian style black lager. Schwazbiers can be some of tastiest beers ever. Sadly most American made versions are a bit lacking. There is nothing lacking about Schwarzinger. It's a truly great example of the style. | - Walt Wit is their very popular wheat beer. It's a Belgian style witbier rather than Bavarian style hefeweizen, but we let witbiers slip in because they are awesome. And Walt Wit is a great one.

Black is New Black: Kostritzer Keep the Glass Night
Thursday November 14, 2013    7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Location:  Hop Angel Brauhaus     Neighborhood: Northeast Philly    Price:  Pay As You Go
Category:   Competition & Giveaways

When it comes to black beer, black is the new black. Because the new black is the old black. Kostritzer is the German black lager that was spotted for a while around these parts about 15 years ago. It's back, still black. | Kostritzer is pretty much the definitive example of schwarzbier. Schwarzbier, aka black lager, is a tough style to master. Not many breweries attempt the style and even fewer truly excel at it. I have tried a lot of schwarzbiers and almost none of them come close to Kostritzer. This is an chance to try the real deal and get a free glass (while supplies last). | From Wikipedia: "The Köstritzer brewery has been owned by the Bitburger Brauerei since 1991. It is located in Bad Köstritz, which is close to Gera in Thuringia. The brewery was founded in 1543 and it is one of the oldest producers of Schwarzbier (black lager) in Germany. One of the most famous drinkers of Köstritzer Schwarzbier was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who sustained himself on black beer from Köstritz when he was unable to eat during a period of illness. The total output of the brewery increased from 14,500,000 L in 1991 to 91,000,000 L in 2004". | From 14.5mm liters of beer to 91mm, that's some increase.  | A bit of schwarbier info for the hard core beer geek (the rest of you can skip this bit): Thuringia the German state, where the town of Bad Kostritz is located, is in what was East Germany. It borders on Franconia, which is now Northern Bavaria. The other definitive schwarzbier is Mönchshof Schwarzbier from Kulmbacher, which is in Franconia. The Franconians seem to prefer to think of themselves as Franconians rather than Bavarians. So Franconian Black or Thuringian Black while not as catchy as "Bavarian Black" would probably be more accurate (although Konig Ludwig, which is just outside of Munich in the heart of Bavaria, does make a great schwarzbier).
