Though beer brewing goes back centuries, craft brewing is a decidedly modern industry. During the launch of Philly Beer Week, CHF presents a special First Friday event honoring the history of both national and local craft brew scenes. First up, we show our hometown pride with a talk led by beer historian Rich Wagner. In “Craft Brewing in Philadelphia, the First 25 Years,” Wagner will share the rich stories of the brewers and breweries that put this city on the map. This will be followed by a talk and tasting led by Left Hand Brewery’s Dan Conway. As the Mid-Atlantic sales rep for the Colorado-based Left Hand, as well as a proud Philadelphian, Conway will share his knowledge of evolving beer trends while serving samples of tasty brews like Left Hand’s rich Milk Stout, ginger-tinged Good Juju Ale, and The Stranger Pale Ale.
Talks and tastings are held at 5:15, 6:15, and 7:15. This event is free and open to the public.

One drink at each bar is included with the tour, as well as a quick stop for one of the most popular snacks in the city, perfect with your beer! At each location, the bars will feature one thing in common with each other - a taste for Philadelphia's local craft beers and breweries. Brewery:
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Details
The Hammer Of Glory is making its way through Philadelphia to arrive at the Philly Beer Week Opening Tap event. Greet it on its way through Fishtown at Johnny Brenda's. We'll be celebrating with a couple of special lmited edition brews on tap, so get them while you can:
Dogfish Head- Burton Baton
Dogfish Head first brews two 'threads' or batches of beer: an English-style Old Ale and an Imperial IPA. After fementating the separate beers in stainless tanks, the two are transferred and blended together in a large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month. When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow this 10% ABV beer - so tread cautiously! Burton Baton is brewed and released only three times per year.
Dogfish Head- Hellhound On My Tail Ale
2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with their friends at Sony Legacy, Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and is dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) the brewers add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.
Dogfish Head- Sah'tea
Sahtea is a highly-quaffable modern update on a 9th century Finnish proto-beer that is brewed with rye. The brewers caramelize the wort with white hot river rocks, then ferment it with a German Weizen yeast. They add juniper berries foraged directly from the Finnish country-side, and tea made with black tea, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper for a subtle spicing.
Dogfish Head- Theobroma
Theobroma or 'food of the gods' is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies, and annatto, a fragrant tree seed. It's light in color - not what you expect with your typical chocolate beer. This beer is part of Dogfish Head's Ancient Ales series and its recipe is based on chemical analysis of pottery that held the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilizations.
Dogfish Head Aprihop
Aprihop is an American IPA brewed with Pilsner and Crystal malts, and is massively hopped in in the continuous fashion. After fermentation, the beer is dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Amarillo hops. The brew is rich with late hop flavors and its bitterness is tempered by just the right amount of malt sweetness and fruity undertones from the apricots.
Dogfish Head- Festina Peche
A refreshing neo-BerlinerWeisse fermented with honest-to-goodness peaches to (get this!) 4.5% abv! Because extreme beers don't have to be extremely boozy! In addition to fermentation with an ale yeast, Berliner Weisse is traditionally fermented with lactic cultures to produce its acidic or green apple-like character. It is delicately hopped with a pale straw color and served as an aperitif or summertime quencher. In the Dogfish Head Festina Peche since the natural peach sugars are eaten by the yeast, the fruit complexity is woven into both the aroma and the taste of the beer so there is no need to doctor it with woodruff or raspberry syrup.

Details
THIS IS NOW A CHARITY EVENT FOR ALEX’S LEMONADE STAND
Monk's is proud to kick off our celebration of Philly Beer Week with a preview of Pierre Tilquin's new gueuze. I visited Tilquin Gueuzerie, his blending facility, a year ago and had the opportunity to taste casks of wort/lambic from Giradin, Boon, Cantillon & Lindemans. This year I was able to taste his first bottled blending from these wooden casks. It's really quite good. Pierre wants to debut the gueuze at Moeder Lambic Fontainas (Brussels, Belgium) at 6PM their time, so we will crack open our bottles at 12:01 our time. We'll give them a full minute to get it rolling over there. Only available here at Monk's Café for this Friday event. The beer will be available to the rest of the US beginning in September, but Philly gets to taste it first. You seriously don't want to miss this if you are a real lambic fan.
NOTE: Pierre sent twenty-four 750ml bottles. We will be offering a 6 ounce portion so that the first 100 guests have an opportunity to sample this fine lambic. Get here early.
ANOTHER NOTE: Pierre Tilquin sent these bottles as a gift and Brian Ewing of 12% Imports won't take money for them. If I don't pay for the beer I don't feel comfortable charging for the beer. I also don't want to give this precious beer away for free. So I decided that we will make this a charity event to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand. A 6 ounce glass will be $5 CASH, with 100% of that money going to Alex's Lemonade Stand. We will be able to raise $500 from this event. Please remember that we will take only cash. Bring some with you or use the ATM in the hallway.

Xavier Vanneste is the founder of Brugse Zot which is the only brewery in the mid-evil city Bruges.
Brugse Zot Blonde Unfiltered is a light beer, brewed at “De Halve Maan” brewery, the last remaining active brewery in the center of Bruges. This is a truly amazing feat that this beer can be kegged for the U.S. Typically, the unfiltered is ONLY served in the brewery itself, where it is being tapped directly from the tanks. We will have on tap the Brugse Zot Dubbel and The filtered version of Brugse Zot (6%) which won 2006 World Cup Gold Medal and Silver Medal in 2010, second only to Global Beer's own Troubadour blonde!
Brugse Zot will be in town only briefly (just for the start of Beer Week in fact) and we are happy to welcome them to the Belgian Cafe to premiere some of their latest delicious smooth brews.
